Collection: Ærø Socks Designed by Birgit Kønig

It was 2006, and Birgit Kønig was on holiday in the Latvian capital Riga when she passed a stall on the street where an elderly lady was selling hand-knitted socks. Birgit stopped and took a closer look at the socks, which were all off-white. But by using different knitting techniques, the woman in the stall had created exciting patterns, so that the socks were still completely different. Birgit bought a pair with different patterns on the shaft and heel, and they took on an importance for her future life that she had not foreseen. Since then, she has designed 336 different pairs of socks, she has knitted around 900 pairs, which have been sold or given away, and she holds workshops on knitting and socks.

But why is it really only sweaters, shawls, hats and the like that we knit in elaborate patterns? Why not socks too? I decided to knit patterned socks and sell them in a stall at home. It could be a nice job when I was going to retire.

"I had no idea that you could knit such nice socks with different techniques"
